AJ’s Movie Review… Batman Begins
This is my own personal opinion and critics, so don’t get pissed! Those who hasn’t seen the movie yet, DO NOT READ BEYOND THIS POINT!
Bang! Poof! Pow! The only thing missing, in what I think for a ‘Saga’ which has finally come full circle towards the beginning. The Batman franchise which has given us Flip-Flop movies throughout its existence has finally given us a movie that we diehard Batman fans can be proud of. Its a ‘Flip’ on the good side and not a ‘Flop’ like a previous neon saturated flick.
In Batman Begins, we can see the origins of the caped crusader and how he became the winged protector of Gotham city. I just love the way they have portrayed Gotham city without using mass CGI methods. Its all (in my eyes) actual cities with the Wayne Enterprise building right smack in the middle of the city. Its not so far fetched like the movies pervious predecessors which really looked fake and unrealistic, except maybe for the first one. Gotham city really reminded me of New York city with its multi level railways and roads around the Brooklyn area. The people looked real enough and the bad guys reminded me of Al Capone and the Mobs of old. Very very classy. That was a good touch.
The up and coming Christian Bale was given the role of the young and confused Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins. I first saw Bale in the SciFi movie Equilibrium who acted as a futuristic police who is a master in ‘Gun-Fu’ and the Law. Sounds corny? Then look up the movie Equilibrium and prepared to be blown away with mind-blowing fighting scenes. The he got the role in Batman Begins… Truth be told, it was a kick in the head when I saw how Bruce Wayne was trained in the arts of the ‘Silent Assassin’. His beginnings was slightly rocky, being thrown into a prison somewhere in China or Tibet because of stealing or robbing or something. Then rescued from rotting in prison by Ras Al Ghul, played by Liam Neeson/ Ken Watanabe. Now there’s a slight twist here which I’m not going to spoil and you have to go watch yourself.
In the movie we also get to know the origins of the Bat Suit and the technology involved in it. What it was originally and also some cool equipments to be used as the caped crusaders non-lethal weapons. My most favorite would be definitely be the Bat Mobile. But unlike the other Batman movies, Bruce Wayne seems to have a liking to tanks! One that roars on jet turbine engines, drives on four wheels, Formula1 type of front suspensions (on steroids), rear wheels and rims of a heavy duty truck or tractor (but can burn rubber like an F1) and a body shape so resembling a particular kind of stealth jet. Overall, the Bat ‘Tank’ is a metal badger that really rocks! Better than the long and sleek bat mobiles of the previous movies. Although I still prefer the Bat Mobile from the first movie with the Joker. The others looks very frail and ridiculous!
As for the storyline, not bad. Action scenes were an orchestra of destruction where most of the time blur images of Batman knocking goons unconscious. But what really set apart this movie from the rest is how they made Batman into a real creature of the night. Disappearing and reappearing from the shadows in a blink of the eye, goons disappearing one by one leaving the one left pissing in his pants. psychological warfare? Most definitely!
Other than the raspy voice that makes Batman sounds like he’s having Bronchitis or the bad case of the sore throat, I’d give Batman Begins a 4 out of 5 just because I’m a HUGE fan of the pointy eared detective!

Actually, they DID shoot it in a real city - it’s Chicago :p The rail tracks are, of course, CGI, but I think the rest of the buildings are real enouogh
